Valley of the Sun J and Desert Foothills Land Trust are excited to host the next installment of the Sonoran Speaker Series, “Medicine or Madness.” Dr. Ken Sweat of Arizona State University will present a fascinating look at how nature’s deadliest compounds are becoming tomorrow’s medical treatments. The event will take place on March 10th, 2026, at 6:00 PM at the Valley of the Sun J.
While modern medicine has made great progress with treatments like organ transplants and gene therapy, some researchers are now looking to a surprising source for new medical breakthroughs: venom. Dr. Sweat’s presentation will show how the same compounds that evolved to cause harm are now being used to help heal.
“It might seem strange that venom could become our partners in fighting disease,” said Dr. Sweat. “But nature has spent millions of years refining these toxic compounds. What’s exciting is that we’re learning how to turn something dangerous into something that can save lives.”
The lecture will explore how venoms from different species — including some from our backyards — are being turned into treatments for various human diseases and conditions. Dr. Sweat will explain the science behind these discoveries and discuss both the exciting possibilities and the challenges of this growing field.
The Sonoran Speaker Series is an ongoing free lecture series designed to connect community members with the natural and cultural heritage of their Sonoran Desert home. The series provides accessible educational opportunities for residents and visitors to deepen their understanding of this unique desert ecosystem and its human history.
