The Michael Kocour Jazz Trio to entertain at Arts at the Rocks
Mark your calendar to attend this much-anticipated concert starring Pianist, Composer and ASU Director of Jazz Studies, Michael Kocour, and his talented compadres, Ben Hedquist and Dom Moio, as they perform original compositions, as well as jazz classics. This talented jazz trio will delight the audience with an afternoon of upbeat and rich melodies leaving us wanting more of their jazzy sounds in the future. Michael Kocour serves as Director of Jazz Studies in the School of Music at ASU. Kocour has appeared at venues around the world and has been a guest on Marian McParland’s internationally syndicated NPR program “Piano Jazz.” His recorded work as a studio musician includes soundtracks to two major motion pictures and numerous television commercials, as well as seven critically acclaimed CDs. Bassist and Educator, Ben Hedquist, hails from Stevens Point, Wisconsin, and holds a master’s and doctorate in double-bass performance from ASU, where he studied under double-bass virtuoso Catalin Rotaru. Percussionist and Author, Dom Moio, started playing drums in the fifth grade. Now in his 20th year at ASU’s jazz faculty, he keeps a very busy teaching and gigging schedule, having recorded more than 65 jazz CDs. As an author of Latin Percussion for Gringo’s, Moio collaborated with his long-time hero Steve Gadd on two book projects, Deep Grooves II and Just Duet, which also includes jazz great Joe LaBarbera.
The concert is FREE and all are welcome on Sunday, Oct. 3, 2021, at 4:00 PM with a reception afterward to meet the musicians. The masters will hold a one-hour Workshop at 2:30 PM. They’ll talk about their performance experiences, jazz influences, and career paths. While the Workshop is FREE, seating is limited in that room, so please call the church office at 480-488-3384 to reserve your seat.
