This cherished tradition returns on Wednesday\, November 11\, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion\, inviting residents and visitors to gather for a heartfelt afternoon of remembrance\, patriotism\, and gratitude for those who have served our country. \nThis year’s celebration will feature keynote speaker Master Sgt. Scott Ford (Retired)\, a highly decorated U.S. Army Green Beret who earned the Silver Star for his extraordinary valor during the Battle of Shok Valley in Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Having served more than 21 years in the U.S. Army\, from 1993 to 2014\, Master Sgt. Ford will share his personal experiences and reflections on courage\, resilience\, and the enduring spirit of service. The afternoon will also include remarks by Chief Master Sgt. Chuck Lee (Retired)\, U.S. Air Force\, on the meaning of Veterans Day. Chief Master Sgt. Lee currently serves as the Carefree SkyRanch Airport Manager. \n

DESCRIPTION:The event welcomes the whole family\, from young children exploring nature for the first time to longtime desert residents. Jewel of the Creek Preserve is set on 26 acres of desert in northern Cave Creek\, and features mature saguaros\, mesquite forest\, and lush cottonwood and willow trees along the Cave Creek riverbed. Visitors can follow discovery maps through stations set up across the preserve\, try their hand at gold panning\, meet animal ambassadors up close\, and take part in interactive exhibits on local wildlife\, history\, and ecology. Activities are geared toward a wide range of ages and interests\, so children and adults alike can find something to enjoy. \nBeyond a day of activities\, Desert Discovery Day is about giving families a chance to unplug and spend time outdoors together\, away from daily routines and screens. It’s also a chance to learn what makes the Sonoran Desert unique\, and to see the conservation work of Desert Foothills Land Trust and its partners in action. Organizers hope it’s an experience families carry with them well beyond the day itself. \n“One of our goals with Desert Discovery Day is to help the next generation develop a love for the desert\,” said Raena Kamakahi\, President and CEO of Desert Foothills Land Trust. “When kids have the chance to explore this landscape firsthand\, they’re more likely to care about protecting it as they grow up.” \n

On Saturday\, November 28\, beginning at 5 p.m.\, the Town of Carefree invites everyone to join us for an evening of holiday magic\, music\, and community spirit. \nThe festivities begin in the beautiful Carefree Desert Gardens\, where families\, friends\, and neighbors will gather around the 20-foot Christmas tree near the Veterans Memorial. The Desert Hills Presbyterian Church Bell Ringers will fill the air with whimsical bells and Joyful Sounds\, a talented local multi-community group of singers\, will lead the crowd in beloved holiday carols. Mayor John Crane will share his holiday wishes before leading the countdown to illuminate the tree and officially welcome the Christmas season. \nFollowing the tree lighting\, stroll just across the street to the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion to continue the celebration. Festive melodies from the young string musicians of Jubilate Conservatory of Music will provide the perfect background music as you grab a free cup of hot chocolate\, courtesy of the Town\, and settle into your seats for a heartwarming Christmas concert beginning at 6 p.m. \nThe concert features incredible talent from within our community\, including performances by the Desert Cactus Kickers\, a dynamic senior tap troupe known for their high-energy\, and POP (Performing Outreach Project)\, an inclusive dance group made up of performers with physical and learning disabilities. Young vocalists from Jubilate Conservatory of Music and Desert Hills School of Music will bring your favorite Christmas songs\, like “White Christmas”\, to life. \nA special addition to this year’s celebration is a magical retelling of the Christmas story\, presented by Desert Hills Presbyterian Church. Through heartfelt readings and traditional carols performed by a collaborative choir of local voices\, this performance will capture the timeless spirit of the season. \nBut what makes Carefree Lights Up! truly special isn’t just the twinkling lights or festive music.
