The Making of Jane Austen
Tuesday, April 16, 3:00-4:30 pm

How did Jane Austen, a moderately successful author in her lifetime, become an international literary icon? It started long before Colin Firth’s wet-white-shirted Mr. Darcy. This illustrated lecture by Professor Devoney Looser will introduce some of the unsung innovators, including artists, activists, dramatists, and actors, who first turned the great English novelist inot a household name. Devoney Looser is Foundation Professor of English at Arizona State University, a Guggenheim Fellow, and an NEH Public Scholar. Her book, The Making of Jane Austen, was a Publishers Weekly Best Summer Book (Nonfiction). Her essays have appeared in The Atlantic, the New York Times, the TLS, and Entertainment Weekly.
