Oil Painting 101/102: Basics and Beyond A Crash Course in Oils (4 week Series)
Mondays, September 5, 12, 19, 26 2022, 10:00 am to 12:00 pm
Cost: $200 (materials not included see materials list below)
1: Materials management: Students will gain a basic understanding of materials commonly used in oil painting; mediums, paints, substrates, brushes, cleaners and solvents, and learn how to choose, use, clean and properly dispose of them.
2: Design: Students will learn the basics of design and composition: learn how to create a notan, define a focal point, and how to manipulate live and photo references to their best advantage. Linework and shading will be addressed.
3: Value v. Color: “Value does all the work and color gets all the credit”: we’ll explore how these two pillars of painting influence our work. We will cover the basics of value structure and color theory. Students will learn how to mix color strings, manage warm v. cool colors in conjunction with their design to create a compelling composition.
4. Painting: Through exercises and directed painting, we will explore alla prima and other techniques addressing linework, blocking, edgeswork, and general technique.
5: Finishing (time permitting): Students will explore various framing and presentation modalities, and learn how to properly frame, wire, and hang their masterpieces.
Students may contact the instructor with questions. This will be an intensive crash course. Hands-on daily painting and note-taking will be expected.
Those interested in continuing to explore at the end of the course may wish to lobby for additional instruction.
