October 15, 2020 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
An event every month that begins at 10:00 am on day Third of the month, repeating until April 21, 2022
An informal discussion of books, film, and theater led by a facilitator. No requirements to read or see any particular film, play, or book. Everyone is invited to share ideas and reflections on the selected theme. This month: Ernest Hemingway’s Influence on American Writers
Hemingway’s tough male protagonists and terse writing influenced a new generation of American writers. Raymond Chandler and James Ellroy reimagined his macho war heroes as hard-boiled detectives. Jack Kerouac, Norman Mailer, Raymond Carver, Ray Bradbury, Bret Easton Ellis and Anne Beattie picked up on his tightly crafted sentences. J.D. Salinger admired Hemingway’s works so much, he called himself “national chairman of the Hemingway Fan Clubs.” Join us at the June Literary Salon and tell us what inspired you about a book either by Hemingway or an author who he influenced.
